This Fall I was working to get in shape to play the company badminton tournament in Calgary. I had wanted to do this for a few years but my wanting was just talk, there was no plan or effort behind it. This year was different, having lost 28 pounds and exercising three times a week, I was ready to get back to my favourite sport.
In my youth, I reached the number two ranking in Quebec and played nationally. Also the last time I played that tournament was shortly after I divorced. I was miserable, got hurt and every dope who heard I was recently divorced tried to pick me up including the married ones. That was in 1993.
I went back to play at my old club that welcomed me with open arms. When it came time to leave for Calgary, my husband got sick. Nothing serious but his sinuses and fever did not permit him to fly. He used to come and cheer me on and since this is more of a social event than a tournament we had a great time together away for a few days. We’ve been to Glasgow, London, Quebec City, Vancouver and Barbados. I was not looking forward to going on my own after the 1993 experience however, I had promised to play ladies doubles with my dear friend Rosemary. Have you ever been in a spot you are committed and there is no pulling out?
Richard, my eldest son and webmaster of this site offered to come with me. I felt a little guilty about accepting but I really didn’t want to go alone and he had recently ended a long term relationship and could use some time away. Also we had first class passes that I had to use or lose. We started off on our journey and during our flight to Calgary; he pitched me the idea of this blog “thekayway”. We laughed about how cheesy it sounded but on the other hand, it had a ring to it. We laughed about a book I had threatened to write with the title “men are pigs, women are psycho”. Richard and I can talk for hours about pretty much everything and nothing.
When we got to Calgary all the people I hadn’t seen since 1998 were shocked by the blond hair, the weight loss and this very handsome young man on my arm. Some people did not even recognize me which was a scream! Once it was made clear this was my son and not my boy toy, there were several men who showed interest in me and young women with Richard. We made a pact to be each other’s wing men. I played the tournament and won the Ladies Doubles Vet division while Richard worked from the hotel room. During the gala dinner, this woman who will remain nameless came up to our table and introduced herself to my son with her cleavage almost in his nose (and yes we have all big noses too). Then she turned to say hi to me which at that point, I asked her if she had met my son. If you could have seen her face, it was priceless and she was gone in heartbeat. Imagine an almost 50 year old trying to pick up a 30 year old, wow this whole cougar thing is real not just on television.
Richard and I had a great time, talked a lot, spent more time together than we had since he was being breastfed. On our flight back home, I took him up on his offer to start writing this blog and we are now in month seven. During May we had 1708 unique visitors and a total of 4759 visits. Thank you all my friends and supporters who are making this blog a success. Every week Richard monitors the site, approves the comments, works on the advertising and also performs the role of Editor-in-Chief by default because he’s alone.
Thank you Richard for suggesting the idea of the blog; for providing me a creative outlet for my stories, my perspective and my authentic self which I am always struggling to become and most of all for always being there for me.
Love always, Mum

Hi!
What a nice mother & son story! You seem to be very close and it is great. Plus, didn’t know you had such a handsome son ;). I would never, however, put my cleavage in his nose. I believe women should make themselves be desires! Yes, I know, I am a little old-fashioned for a 35 year old…
Hug & kisses, Claudia
Hi, you’re still a baby only 3 years older than Richard and a lady. You’ve got plenty of time. You’d be surprised what women do these days, all of my sons have had their bums pinched and much more blatant come ons. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers
I`m laughing out loud because Richard is my best friend in the world, and I would have payed good money to see his face when that puma made a pass at him. Too funny!
