Once when my middle son was 8 he got cheated by a convenience store owner when he bought his weekly 50 cents worth of candy, he came home very upset. I was enraged that an adult would cheat a little boy out of his 50 cents. I stamped down to the store with my son in tow and confronted the owner.
If you ever saw me get really angry which rarely happens, I’m told it can be a bit intimidating. The owner was contrite to the say the least and my son received his money back and special treatment from then on.
This was the day Rambo Mom was born. My children made up this name. Rambo Mom is brought out when someone in my intimate circle is cheated or hurt by the “system”. The system can include the government, a store, a company or medical establishment. Recently my grown son was poorly cared for by a dental clinic.
I offered to invoke Rambo Mom which was accepted. I approached the Manager of the clinic who had the audacity not to return my call. Not good, not wise. When I did get hold of the Manager, I had to rip her a new one and threaten legal action. She offered to fix the tooth for free and provided her top dentist to do the job. The situation was resolved and Rambo Mom was returned to her hiding place where she waits until needed again…..
P.S. I can also be Rambo Friend, Rambo Boss, Rambo Wife, Rambo Employee, Rambo Grandmother, Rambo Mother-in-law….you get the idea. Have you ever had to be a Rambo? tell me about it.

You’ve had to bust out Rambo Mom for me on a few occaisions, and I am grateful for those times. Do you think “Rambo Mom” is something that can be taught? You are always able to pull it off so gracefully, Kay. I can only see myself becoming “angry, hysterical mom” if someone were to try and take advantage of Ro. And I doubt “angry, hysterical mom” would get the results I’m looking for!
Thank you for writing. You’re right Amy, it is very hard to control our anger when our loved ones, especially our children get hurt. I can be angry, hysterical Mom on the inside but can’t show it. With time and experience one learns that depending on the situation, Rambo Mom is an appropriate response. We have to be careful that our kids learn to fix their own problems and teach them the skills to do that. That’s my challenge and I’m working on it.
As the proud son of one the toughest Rambo Moms to ever come out of Europe, I salute you Kay and thank you for fighting the good fight!
