I realized a few years ago when my alarm clock would go off, the headlines for the news would come on. Before I had a chance to start my day or even put my feet on the ground I allowed myself to be bombarded with the atrocities that people do to each other plus any world disasters or these days; market meltdowns. Being a sensitive person, this would affect me. I remember the day I decided to stop this. The newsman told a story about a young girl who had been repeatedly sodomized and her attacker was given a light sentence because he hadn’t actually raped her.
That was it for me. I felt nauseous and vowed not to allow this to happen to me again. Listening to that did nothing for that little girl except ruin my day. The judicial system let her down. My best friend become obsessed with CNN during the 9/11 crisis should couldn’t turn it off. So how can we balance between being an ostrich, being informed and allowing the bad news to overwhelm our consciousness?
The reality is that news shows and newspapers don’t show a balanced view of the world. Most people are nice to each other. The millions of kindnesses that people do for each other every day are simply not newsworthy. So it’s okay to watch the news but don’t spend hours. Get the information you need to manage your life and then go out and live.
Don’t spend time on things you can’t control while ignoring the ones you can.

Hi Kay, It’s great to see you joined the blogging world. I’ve been blogging for three years now and started a business with my blog a year ago. It’s an amazing journey and a great way for social networking. I have to say I felt the same for a brief time about listening to the news, even now I listen to different news channel, CBC, CTV, CNN and read news articles from many different papers around the globe and watch tons of documentaries. Yes, it can be very depressing and ruin a person’s day when you feel helpless. I found out we can all make a difference even with all the tragedy in the world, informing others when writing about it never knowing if a person you reached out to, will also make a difference. My business is dedicated to making a difference and only hope one day my efforts will help reach out to someone that will also make a difference in this messed up world we live in.
Take care Kay, great blog, keep it up.
Thank you Amanda for taking the time to encourage me.
It’s great to get support from someone who has experience in the blogging world. I agree with you that everyone can make a difference. All of the most important discoveries have been accomplished by one person. I appreciate your feedback.
Best regards,
Kay

Welcome to the blogosphere Kay, it is now certainly a more interesting place now that you have staked your claim. I think this blog is going to be huge!
With regards to morning news/evening news, etc., I couldn’t agree more; total rubbish. Back in high school I used to watch Canada Am all the time to get my brain process going in the groggy wee hours. I watched routinely until one day I realized how obnoxious the whole thing was. I mean here were these idiot “hosts” all powdered and made up, smiling like they were in a Sunny D commercial, pretending to laugh at the irritating weatherman’s predictable antics/jokes, while the rest of the world was disheveled, in their underwear, desperately trying to come up with a valid-sounding reason to not go into work.
Nowadays, I tune in to the morning shows once in a while just to marvel at the insanity of it all. I specifically enjoy (read: can’t stand!) how they have these little “great holiday gift ideas” segments that are basically shallow, disguised infomercials. Oh and I secretly watch hoping that one of the anchors will say something unintentional or inappropriate and make everything really awkward for the rest of the cast. Closet vicarious sadist, right here everybody!
Keep up the awesome work Kay, I for one will be tuning in regularly!
I agree, we should focus on the things which we can control.
If we can not control something, there is no point feeling bad about it.
