I am a natural brunette (almost black). My family are all prematurely grey. I started getting grey at 19 and by the time I was 24 I started dying my hair. I dyed my hair every 28 days from then on. In my forties I realized that at some point I would have to move away from the black because I have very pale skin and the black would look harsh and unnatural. I also suffer from seasonal alopecia which means some of my hair falls out in the Spring.
I finally got up the courage to make a change about 18 months ago. I had a blond wig in the 70’s that looked really good so I went down to the department store with my BFF and we tried on different wigs and took pictures. I sent the picture of the color I wanted to my friend who is a hairdresser.
Thus began the transformation. I will spare you the details but it took 7 hours to go from black to dark brown. A month later I went from brown to dark blond and then a month later to the light blond I have now.
People I haven’t seen in years don’t recognize me which is really funny. If I’m wearing sunglasses, I can be totally incognito. People smile at me all the time; men, women and children. My observation is that the blond hair makes me more approachable. It is wonderful not to have to dye my hair so often and avoid the incredible mess black hair dye makes to anything it comes in contact with.
For the first time in my life, I like my hair. I can wear it curly or straight. My husband didn’t want me to take this step but loves his new wife. Even my children like the new look.
Here’s a picture of the “old me” with my husband from our wedding day.
You can decide for yourself.

I too went from original brunette, to blond, to now almost black and also have that problem grey around the hairline. I was on again off again blond for a long time and I also noticed attention was drawn more with my blond hair. I also noticed the difference in treatment and could get away with so much. I decided one day to go back to dark hair not to long ago and remember the look on my kids face, astonished. I had so many compliments though and told the dark hair brought out my eyes more. It took much getting used to and with previously working in a salon I know how much time and money it takes to do a colour change, but it’s good you went to a hairdresser. I know women who have done a complete change over using home colour and their hair turned out green, yellow or purple. I don’t mind using box colour now that I use the same colour (close those ears and eyes to stylists, my co workers would shoot me hearing that). It is fun to be blond, enjoy! Just so you know you look stunning in both hair colours especially with such a beautiful genuine smile…:)
Kay - you looked beautiful on your wedding day.
